If you are looking for a more affordable alternative to air conditioning, an evaporative cooler might be just what you need.
Don’t be confused by the many names for evaporative coolers, including “swamp cooler,” “desert cooler,” and “wet air cooler.” These all refer to the same type of cooling equipment.
So How Does it Work?
An evaporative cooler is a device that cools air through the evaporation of water. A portable swamp cooler is box-like in shape, set on wheels for easy maneuvering, and powered by electricity. Evaporative coolers contain a fan that is boxed in by moistened pads made of cedar shavings or cellulose, as you can see in the photo on the right. The unit works by pulling in hot air and pushing it through the wet pads. The pads are kept wet by a water line and aided by evaporation. The air flow, which is then circulated around the room, is cooled by 10-15 degrees.
