It’s All About Air Flow – How Fans Help Improve Heating and Cooling Efficiency

Did you know that using fans year-round can save you money on your energy bill?

36" floor fanMost people only think of using fans when the weather is warm. When used in conjunction with an air conditioner or open window, fans are great for circulating air in a room. The feeling of air moving over the skin and the evaporating sweat makes people feel cooler, but doesn’t necessarily reduce the room temperature.

When you use a fan with your air conditioner, you are able to maximize the effect of your air conditioning unit at a lower setting, allowing you to save money on your energy bill.

How Fans Can Warm Your Space

You can also take advantage of the money-saving benefits of fans during the winter months! Switching your fan to the reverse position will circulate the air in the opposite direction. Many people don’t realize that there are actually switches on fans that allow you to choose which way the blades rotate. To warm things up, the blades should be moving clockwise at a slow speed.

Instead of moving the air around the room, the fan will pull the warmer air from the ceiling and push it back down toward the floor. By keeping the fan on a slow speed and moving the airflow downward, you’re able to set the thermostat 3-5° lower.
